Infrastructure

The City of Albany is located in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. The City of Albany encompasses a rural area surrounding a regional township, with Albany being the administrative and service hub for the wider region. The urban areas are on the shores of Princess Royal Harbour, Oyster Harbour and King George Sound. Forest, coastal bush and farmland surround the urban areas. The City encompasses a total land area of about 4,300 square kilometres. Rural land is used mainly for agriculture. Tourism is also an important industry.

Key employment sectors include retail trade, health care and social assistance, education and training, construction, and agriculture, forestry and fishing. The Albany CBD is the City's major retail centre, with smaller retail centres at Albany Plaza, Bayonet Head Shopping Centre and Spencer Park Shopping Centre. Albany has one major hospital, Albany Hospital, and numerous smaller health and aged care facilities. The City of Albany features three tertiary institutions; The University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Great Southern Institute of Technology, and numerous primary and secondary schools. The main agricultural industries are sheep and cattle grazing, timber production, and fruit and vegetable growing.
