Balonne Shire is located in south-west Queensland. The Shire encompasses a total land area of over 31,000 square kilometres. Balonne Shire is a predominantly rural area, with several small townships. Most of the population lives in the main township of St George and the smaller townships of Bollon, Dirranbandi, Hebel, Mungindi and Thallon. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, with horticulture also being an important industry.
The key employment sector in Balonne Shire is agriculture forestry and fishing, with other significant employment sectors being retail trade, health care and education. The main agricultural industries are cotton and wheat growing, and sheep and cattle grazing, with fruit and vegetable growing also being important industries. Forestry is also a significant industry, with several state forests located in the Shire. The main commercial centre is the St George township, with a smaller commercial area in the township of Dirranbandi. The main health care facilities in the Shire are Dirranbandi Hospital, Mungindi Hospital and St George Hospital. Educational facilities are provided at a number of schools.
