Bankstown City is located in Sydney's south-western suburbs. Bankstown City is a residential, commercial and industrial area. The City encompasses a total land area of 77 square kilometres.
The key employment sector in Bankstown City is manufacturing, with other significant employment sectors being retail trade, health care and education. The main industrial areas in the City are located in the northern suburbs of Chester Hill, Chullora, Regents Park, Sefton and Villawood, and the central suburbs of Bankstown, Bankstown Aerodrome, Condell Park, Milperra, Padstow and Revesby. The major retail centres in Bankstown City are the Bankstown CBD and Bankstown Central Shopping Centre. Other major retail areas include Bass Hill Plaza, Chester Square Shopping Centre, Chullora Marketplace, Padstow Shopping Centre, Revesby Village Centre and the retail area along Waterloo Road (Greenacre), with bulky goods shopping at Homemaker City Bankstown. The City has one major public hospital, Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. Bankstown City is home to the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. The City features two tertiary institutions: TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute (Bankstown and Padstow Colleges and Lidcombe College Chullora Campus) and University of Western Sydney (Bankstown Campus), along with numerous schools.
