In the Canberra Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $1,180 million in 2015/16.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Canberra Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in Canberra Region in 2015/16 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($1,180 million or 24.1%)
  • Manufacturing ($711 million or 14.5%)
  • Mining ($514 million or 10.5%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $2,404 million in total or 49.0% of the total exports by total industry in the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 2.8% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 13.2% in Manufacturing; and 7.8% in Mining.

The major differences between total exports by industries in the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (24.1% compared to 2.8%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Accommodation and Food Services (10.5% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.1% compared to 15.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (2.7% compared to 9.5%)

Emerging groups

The total exports by industries in the Canberra Region increased by $257.5 million between 2010/11 and 2015/16.

The largest changes in total exports by industries between 2010/11 and 2015/16 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Public Administration and Safety (-$91 million)
  • Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (+$73 million)
  • Mining (+$70 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$63 million)
