In the Canberra Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $3,541 million in 2015/16.

Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the Canberra Region boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in Canberra Region in 2015/16 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($3,541 million or 30.0%)
  • Mining ($1,390 million or 11.8%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($1,138 million or 9.7%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $6,069 million in total or 51.5% of the total imports by total industry in the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional NSW accounted for 32.0% in Manufacturing; 13.4% in Mining; and 8.3% in Financial and Insurance Services.

The major differences between total imports by industries in the Canberra Region and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (9.7% compared to 8.3%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (4.1% compared to 2.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (30.0% compared to 32.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (11.8% compared to 13.4%)

Emerging groups

The total imports by industries in the Canberra Region increased by $2,214.7 million between 2010/11 and 2015/16.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2010/11 and 2015/16 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Mining (+$594 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$563 million)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+$182 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$168 million)
