Dominant groups

An analysis of the local sales by industry sectors in Canberra Region in 2015/16 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Construction (2,431 people or 18.6%)
  • Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (1,630 people or 12.5%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (911 people or 7.0%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $4,972 million in total or 38.0% of the total local sales by total industry in the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 16.8% in Construction; 14.1% in Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services; and 5.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between local sales by industries in the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of local sales by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (5.5% compared to 1.5%)
  • A larger percentage of local sales by Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (6.7% compared to 3.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of local sales by Financial and Insurance Services (3.1% compared to 7.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of local sales by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (4.4% compared to 7.8%)

The largest changes in the local sales by industries between 2010/11 and 2015/16 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (-$118 million)
  • Wholesale Trade (+$90 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$90 million)
