Gosford City is located in the Central Coast Region of New South Wales. The City encompasses a total land area of about 1,030 square kilometres, of which a large proportion is State Forest, National Park and nature reserves, including beaches and waterways. Gosford City is a rural and residential area, with some commercial land use. The City has a dispersed population, with 95% of the population in settlements to the east of the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. The main population centres are the Woy Woy Peninsula, Terrigal, Erina, Kariong and Kincumber. Smaller villages are located along the coast and surrounding Brisbane Water.

Key employment sectors include health care and retail trade, and to a lesser extent, accommodation and food services, manufacturing, construction and education. Gosford City features one major public hospital (Gosford Hospital), one smaller public hospital (Woy Woy Hospital), and two small private hospitals (Brisbane Waters and Gosford Private Hospitals). Erina Fair Shopping Centre is the City’s major retail centre, with numerous other significant centres, including the Gosford CBD (Gateway Shopping Centre, Gosford Town Centre, Imperial Shopping Centre and Park Plaza), Deepwater Plaza Shopping Centre, Erina Mall, Fountain Plaza Shopping Centre, Green Point Shopping Centre, Green Point Village Shopping Centre, Home Central Shopping Centre, Kincumber Village Shopping Centre, Lisarow Plaza, Niagara Park Shopping Centre, Peninsula Plaza Shopping Centre, West Gosford Shopping Centre and Wyoming Shopping Centre, and the Ettalong Markets. The main industrial areas are located to the west and north of the Gosford CBD; in the suburbs of Lisarow, North Gosford, Somersby, West Gosford and Wyoming, and also in the south-eastern suburb of Kincumber. Gosford City features one tertiary institution (TAFE NSW Hunter Institute - Gosford Campus), along with numerous private and public schools.
