The Gympie Regional Council area is located in the Wide Bay Burnett Region of south-east Queensland. The Gympie Regional Council area encompasses a total land area of about 6,900 square kilometres. The Gympie Regional Council area is a rural, urban and rural-residential area. The main population centre is Gympie, with small townships and communities at Amamoor, Cooloola Cove, Curra, Goomeri, Gunalda, Imbil, Kandanga, Kilkivan, Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Traveston and Woolooga. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, particularly beef production and forestry. Tourism is also an important industry.

The key employment sectors in the Gympie Regional Council area are retail trade, health care, manufacturing, agriculture forestry and fishing, and education. The main retail areas are located in and around the township of Gympie (Gympie Town Centre, Gympie Central shopping centre, Goldfields Plaza, Gympie Marketplace shopping centre and Southside Town Centre), with other retail areas in the small townships of Cooloola Cove, Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay (Dolphin Shopping Centre). Health care services are provided at Gympie Hospital and Gympie Private Hospital. The main industrial areas are located in the township of Gympie and the localities to the immediate south of Gympie. The primary agricultural industries in the Council area are sheep, dairy and beef farming, and fruit, nut, vegetable and grain growing. Timber production and fishing are also significant industries. Educational facilities are provided at TAFE Queensland East Coast (Gympie Campus), University of the Sunshine Coast Gympie Campus, and numerous schools.
