Manufacturing employs more of the Macarthur Region’s local labour force than any other industry sector.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the local labour force in Macarthur Region in 2011 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Manufacturing (14,968 people or 13.0%)
  • Retail Trade (12,229 people or 10.6%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (11,926 people or 10.4%)

In combination these three industries employed 39,123 people in total or 34.0% of the total local labour force.

In comparison, New South Wales employed 8.4% in Manufacturing; 10.3% in Retail Trade; and 11.6% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between the jobs held by the local labour force of the Macarthur Region and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of local labour force employed in Manufacturing (13.0% compared to 8.4%)
  • A larger percentage of local labour force employed in Transport, Postal and Warehousing (7.8% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of local labour force employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (4.6% compared to 7.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of local labour force employed in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (0.9% compared to 2.2%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the local labour force between 2006 and 2011 in the Macarthur Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+2,243 local labour force)
  • Education and Training (+991 local labour force)
  • Construction (+909 local labour force)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+753 local labour force)
