RDA Wide Bay Burnett Region
The RDA Wide Bay Burnett Region is located in south-east Queensland. The Region encompasses a total land area of about 48,600 square kilometres. The RDA Wide Bay Burnett Region is predominantly rural, with rural-residential, residential, commercial and industrial land use in numerous urban centres and small townships. The main urban centres are Bundaberg, Gayndah, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Kingaroy and Maryborough, with numerous smaller townships and villages, and an aboriginal community at Cherbourg. Rural land is used largely for forestry, agriculture and horticulture. Tourism is also an important industry, particularly along the coast. The Region is home to a gold mine near Mount Perry, a Siltstone quarry at Eidsvold, and the Meandu Coal Mine and power stations at Tarong.
Key employment sectors in the RDA Wide Bay Burnett Region include retail trade, health care, agriculture forestry and fishing, manufacturing and education. The main retail centres in the Region are the Bundaberg CBD, the Gympie Town Centre, the Hervey Bay CBD, Kingaroy Shoppingworld and the Maryborough CBD, with numerous smaller retail centres. Health care facilities are provided at two large public hospitals (Bundaberg Hospital and Hervey Bay Hospital), one large private hospital (Friendly Society Private Hospital Bundaberg), four smaller private hospitals (Gympie Private, Mater Misericordiae Bundaberg, South Burnett Private Kingaroy and St Stephen's Hervey Bay), and numerous small public hospitals (Cherbourg, Childers, Gayndah, Gin Gin, Gympie, Kingaroy, Maryborough, Murgon, Nanango and Wondai). The main agricultural industries are sugar cane, fruit, vegetable, cereal and crop growing and sheep, dairy and beef farming, with forestry also being an important industry. The main industrial areas in the Region are located in the townships of Bundaberg, Gayndah, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Kingaroy and Maryborough. Educational facilities are provided at Central Queensland University (Bundaberg Campus), TAFE Queensland East Coast (Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Gympie and Maryborough Campuses), TAFE Queensland South West (Kingaroy and Nurunderi Campuses), University of Southern Queensland (Fraser Coast Campus), University of the Sunshine Coast (Gympie Campus), and numerous primary and secondary schools.
