SHOROC Region

Employment by industry (Census)

Retail Trade is the largest employer in the SHOROC Region, making up 13.7% of total employment.

Census employment data presents the number of persons employed in each industry sector (full-time and part-time) in SHOROC Region regardless of where they live. By comparing the number of jobs in each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see local economic strengths and weaknesses. By looking at how the number of jobs in each industry is changing over time, you can track how the structure of the local economy is changing. Go to the Employment locations page to see where employment is taking place across the SHOROC Region.

NOTE: Census employment figures are known to undercount employment by at at least 20% due to poor recording of workplace addresses, and large numbers of workers who don’t answer the relevant question, or have no usual workplace address. While this data shows the underlying structure of the economy and relative proportions of different industries, it should not be used as an accurate measure of local jobs. Census employment data should be viewed alongside modelled Employment by industry (Total) and Employment by industry (FTE) data which resolves the undercount issue and is a more accurate and up to date reflection of total job numbers.
