In the SHOROC Region, Manufacturing had the largest total imports by industry, generating $4,040 million in 2015/16.

Imports by industry are sales of goods and services from industries located outside the SHOROC Region boundaries to resident households, businesses and other organisations within the area. Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in SHOROC Region in 2015/16 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($4,040 million or 27.1%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing ($1,429 million or 9.6%)
  • Mining ($1,383 million or 9.3%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $6,852 million in total or 46.0% of the total imports by total industry in the SHOROC Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in New South Wales accounted for 29.5% in Manufacturing; 6.6% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing; and 11.4% in Mining.

The major differences between total imports by industries in the SHOROC Region and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Education and Training (5.3% compared to 1.9%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (9.6% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1.3% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (27.1% compared to 29.5%)

Emerging groups

The total imports by industries in the SHOROC Region increased by $3,032.5 million between 2010/11 and 2015/16.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2010/11 and 2015/16 in the SHOROC Region were for:

  • Financial and Insurance Services (+$630 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$612 million)
  • Mining (+$316 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$221 million)
