Infrastructure

Sutherland Shire is located at the southern coastal border of the Sydney metropolitan area. The Shire encompasses a total land area of about 370 square kilometres, including beaches, waterways, bushlands, parklands and national parks. Sutherland Shire is predominantly a residential area, but also has substantial industrial, commercial and rural areas.

Key employment sectors in Sutherland Shire include retail trade, health care, education and manufacturing. The two major retail centres in the Shire are Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre and Cronulla Bicentennial Plaza. The Shire also has numerous smaller retail centres (Alfords Point Shopping Centre, Bangor Shopping Centre, Bonnet Bay Shopping Village, Caringbah Shopping Village, Engadine Town Square, Gymea Shopping Village, Illawong Village, Kareela Village, Kingsway Mall, Menai Marketplace, Menai Metro, Parkside Plaza, Richmond Shopping Centre, Southgate Shopping Centre, Sutherland Shopping Centre, The Kiora Centre, Woronora Heights Shopping Centre and Yarrawarrah Shopping Village), with bulky goods shopping at Caringbah Homemaker Centre. The Shire features one major public hospital (Sutherland Hospital) and one small private hospital (President Private Hospital). Educational facilities are provided at TAFE NSW Sydney Institute – Sutherland College (Gymea and Loftus Campuses), the University of Wollongong Loftus Education Centre, and numerous private and public schools. The main industrial areas are located in the suburbs of Caringbah, Kirrawee, Kurnell, Lucas Heights and Taren Point, including Caltex Refineries, Lucas Heights Research Laboratories, Lucas Heights Research, Science & Technology Centre, Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (A.N.S.T.O) and Cronulla Wastewater Treatment Plant.
