The City of Tea Tree Gully is located in Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs. The City encompasses a total land area of about 95 square kilometres. Tea Tree Gully is an established predominantly residential area, with some rural areas in the east, and numerous commercial areas. Areas in the west of the City comprise established and newly developed residential suburbs.

The north-east of the City includes an established extractive industry area as well as the catchment area of the Little Para Reservoir. The key employment sectors include retail, health, education and manufacturing. Major retail centres in Tea Tree Gully include Golden Grove Village, Tea Tree Plus and Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, with several smaller centres (Fairview Park, Golden Grove, Hope Valley and St Agnes). Tea Tree Gully features one major public hospital (Modbury) and one tertiary institution (TAFE SA).
