Wagga Wagga City is located in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales. The City encompasses a total land area of 4,886 square kilometres. Wagga Wagga City constitutes both rural and urban areas, with some commercial, industrial and military areas. Most of the population is located in the urban areas. The largest centre is central Wagga Wagga, followed by Kooringal and Lake Albert. Most residential growth is on the higher ground to the south of the city centre, with the only residential areas north of the Murrumbidgee River being North Wagga Wagga and Estella. Rural land is used mainly for wheat-growing, dairy farming, mixed farming and sheep grazing.

Key employment sectors in Wagga Wagga City include health care, public administration and safety, retail trade, and education, and to a lesser extent, manufacturing. Wagga Wagga City features one major public hospital (Wagga Wagga Base Hospital) and one smaller private hospital (Calvary Health Care Riverina). The major retail centre is Wagga Wagga Town Centre (including Sturt Mall and Wagga Wagga Marketplace), with smaller retail centres at Kooringal Mall and Southcity Shopping Centre. Wagga Wagga features two tertiary institutions (Charles Sturt University - Wagga Wagga Main and Wagga Wagga South Campuses, and TAFE NSW Riverina Institute - Wagga Wagga Campus and Primary Industries Centre), Vianney College (Catholic Seminary), and numerous public and private schools. The main industrial areas are located in the suburbs of Bomen and East Wagga Wagga. Military areas are located in the suburbs of Kapooka (Army Recruit Training Centre - Blamey Barracks) and Forest Hill (RAAF Base Wagga). The City is home to the Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre, which is located in the suburb of Turvey Park.
