Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in Ballina Shire in 2016/17 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($149 million or 23.7%)
  • Manufacturing ($96 million or 15.2%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($74 million or 11.7%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $318 million in total or 50.7% of the total exports by total industry in Ballina Shire.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Northern Rivers accounted for 15.4% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 25.4% in Manufacturing; and 10.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between total exports by industries in Ballina Shire and Northern Rivers were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (23.7% compared to 15.4%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Mining (10.8% compared to 5.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (15.2% compared to 25.4%)
