The City of Banyule is located in Melbourne's north-eastern suburbs. The City encompasses a total land area of 63 square kilometres. Banyule is an established predominantly residential area, with significant open spaces and parklands, and some educational, health, commercial and industrial land uses.

Key employment sectors include health, retail, manufacturing and education. Banyule's health facilities include two major public hospitals (Austin and Heidelberg Repatriation), two smaller hospitals (Mercy for Women and Warringal) and Odyssey House. Banyule features two major retail centres (Centro Warringal and Greensborough) and numerous smaller centres. Banyule's main industrial area is located in Heidelberg West, with smaller industrial precincts in Bundoora and Greensborough. Banyule features one tertiary institution (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) and numerous private and public schools.
