The Bayside Council area is located in Sydney's southern and south-eastern suburbs. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 55 square kilometres, including significant foreshore and parkland areas. The Bayside Council area is a mixed use area, with residential, industrial and commercial land use.
The key employment sectors in the Bayside Council area are transport postal and warehousing, tourism, manufacturing and retail trade. The Bayside Council area is home to Sydney Airport, the northern part of Port Botany (Patrick Container Terminal) and numerous industrial areas in the suburbs of Arncliffe, Banksmeadow, Botany, Eastgardens, Hillsdale, Kogarah, Mascot, Rockdale, Turrella and Wolli Creek. Tourism is an important industry, with the area being close to the Sydney CBD, including the Sydney Airport, and featuring various beaches, baths, golf clubs and parks. The major retail centres are Westfield Eastgardens Shopping Centre and Rockdale Plaza Shopping Centre, with smaller centres at Bayside Plaza Shopping Centre, Eastlakes Shopping Centre, Ramsgate Plaza Shopping Centre, Southpoint Shopping Centre, the Botany Road retail area (Mascot) and the commercial area along Princes Highway (Rockdale).
