City of Greater Bendigo
The City of Greater Bendigo is located in north central Victoria. Greater Bendigo encompasses a total land area of 3,000 square kilometres, to which a significant proportion is national park, regional park, reserve or bushland. The municipality includes Victoria's fourth largest city in Bendigo, as well as a significant rural hinterland. Smaller townships are located at Axedale, Elmore, Goornong, Heathcote, Marong and Redesdale. Much of the rural land is used for agricultural purposes, including poultry and pig farming, sheep and cattle grazing and vineyards. Most of the City's retail space is in the Bendigo CBD or along the main roads. There is some industrial land use in the suburbs around the CBD.
Key employment sectors include retail, health, manufacturing and education. The major retail centre is the Bendigo Central Business District, with several other significant shopping centres (Bendigo Marketplace, Eaglehawk CBD, Golden Square, Heathcote, Lansell Plaza and Strath Village). Bendigo features a major public hospital (Bendigo Hospital) and several smaller health services (Anne Caudle Centre, Eaglehawk Day Hospital, Heathcote Hospital and Mount Alvernia Hospital). The main industrial areas are located in East Bendigo, Epsom and Golden Square. Bendigo features two tertiary institutions (Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE and La Trobe University), the Bendigo School of Nursing, and numerous schools.
NOTE: The land use shown in the map is derived from ABS Mesh Block categories. Mesh Blocks broadly identify land use and are not designed to provide definitive land use. It is purely an indicator of the main planned land use for a Mesh Blocks. For more information please refer to ABS Mesh Block categories.
