Dominant groups

An analysis of the domestic exports by industry sectors in Cairns in 2017/18 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing ($810 million or 20.7%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services ($422 million or 10.8%)
  • Public Administration and Safety ($364 million or 9.3%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $1,597 million in total or 40.8% of the total domestic export by total industry in Cairns.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 11.3% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing; 3.7% in Accommodation and Food Services; and 9.6% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between domestic exports by industries in Cairns and Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of domestic exports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (20.7% compared to 11.3%)
  • A larger percentage of domestic exports by Accommodation and Food Services (10.8% compared to 3.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of domestic exports by Mining (1.9% compared to 11.5%)

The largest changes in the domestic exports by industries between 2002/03 and 2017/18 in Cairns were for:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$299 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$226 million)
  • Administrative and Support Services (+$217 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$199 million)
