Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in Cairns in 2016/17 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($2,144 million or 42.0%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($729 million or 14.3%)
  • Information Media and Telecommunications ($331 million or 6.5%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $3,204 million in total or 62.7% of the total imports by total industry in Cairns.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 36.1% in Manufacturing; 8.9% in Financial and Insurance Services; and 4.7% in Information Media and Telecommunications.

The major differences between total imports by industries in Cairns and Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (42.0% compared to 36.1%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (14.3% compared to 8.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Public Administration and Safety (2.0% compared to 5.0%)
