Dominant groups

An analysis of the domestic imports by industry sectors in Cairns in 2017/18 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Financial and Insurance Services ($709 million or 21.6%)
  • Manufacturing ($586 million or 17.8%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services ($303 million or 9.2%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $1,598 million in total or 48.7% of the total domestic import by total industry in Cairns.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 14.2% in Financial and Insurance Services; 12.8% in Manufacturing; and 9.3% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between domestic imports by industries in Cairns and Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of domestic imports by Financial and Insurance Services (21.6% compared to 14.2%)
  • A larger percentage of domestic imports by Manufacturing (17.8% compared to 12.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of domestic imports by Public Administration and Safety (3.2% compared to 8.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of domestic imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1.4% compared to 4.3%)

The total domestic import by industry in Cairns decreased by $282.5 million between 2012/13 and 2017/18.

The largest changes in the domestic imports by industries between 2012/13 and 2017/18 in Cairns were for:

  • Manufacturing (-$300 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (-$72 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$52 million)
