Dominant groups

An analysis of the local sales by industry sectors in Cairns in 2017/18 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Construction (1,979 people or 16.0%)
  • Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (1,962 people or 15.9%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (867 people or 7.0%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $4,808 million in total or 38.9% of the total local sales by total industry in Cairns.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 19.0% in Construction; 14.9% in Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services; and 4.4% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between local sales by industries in Cairns and Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of local sales by Public Administration and Safety (7.0% compared to 4.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of local sales by Construction (16.0% compared to 19.0%)
