In Cairns, there are more younger workers (15 to 44 years) than older workers (45 year and over) working in Public Administration and Safety.

Analysis of the age structure of the Public Administration and Safety workforce in Cairns in 2016 compared to Wholesale Trade shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (15 to 44 years) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (45 years and over).
Overall, 54.5% of the Public Administration and Safety workforce was aged under 45 years, compared to 52.6% for Wholesale Trade. 45.5% were aged 45 years and over, compared to 47.4% for Wholesale Trade.
The major differences between the age structure of the Public Administration and Safety workforce in Cairns and the Wholesale Trade workforce were:
- A smaller percentage of local workers aged 15 to 24 years (5.7% compared to 9.1%)
- A larger percentage of local workers aged 25 to 34 years (21.5% compared to 18.0%)
- A larger percentage of local workers aged 45 to 54 years (26.6% compared to 24.1%)
