South East Queensland


In the South East Queensland, Manufacturing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $31,336 million in 2022/23.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the South East Queensland boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the South East Queensland in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing (31,336 million or 20.2%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (20,922 million or 13.5%)
  • Mining (12,458 million or 8.0%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 64,715 million in total or 41.7% of the total exports by industry in the the South East Queensland.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 15.2% in Manufacturing; 9.6% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing and 31.5% in Mining.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the South East Queensland and Queensland were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Mining (8.0% compared to 31.5%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (20.2% compared to 15.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (3.5% compared to 7.8%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (13.5% compared to 9.6%)

Emerging groups

The total total exports by industry in the South East Queensland $increased by 23,493 million between 2016/17 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2016/17 and 2022/23 in the South East Queensland were for:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$4,116 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$3,425 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$3,339 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$2,120 million)
