Resident workers - Industry

Health Care and Social Assistance employs more of the South East Queensland's resident workforce than any other industry sector.

Industry sector data identifies the industries in which the residents of an area work either within the residing area or elsewhere. Comparing the industry sectors in which the South East Queensland residents are employed in the industry sectors that are located in the South East Queensland, indicates whether an economy draws on the skills offered by its own residents, or on a different set of skills imported from elsewhere in the region.

  • The economic base and employment opportunities available within commuting distance;
  • The educational levels of the local population; and
  • The working and social aspirations of the local population.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in the South East Queensland in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (285,372 people or 15.6%)
  • Construction (172,088 people or 9.4%)
  • Retail Trade (170,080 people or 9.3%)

In combination these three industries employed 627,540 people in total or 34.3% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, Greater Brisbane employed 15.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 8.6% in Construction and 9.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of the South East Queensland and Greater Brisbane were:

  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Construction (9.4% compared to 8.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Public Administration and Safety (5.9% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (7.8% compared to 8.5%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Accommodation and Food Services (7.1% compared to 6.4%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident workforce between 2016 and 2021 in the South East Queensland were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+77,629 resident workforce)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+29,387 resident workforce)
  • Construction (+23,993 resident workforce)
  • Education and Training (+20,598 resident workforce)
