In the Canberra Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $2,595 million in 2022/23.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Canberra Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2,595 million or 19.8%)
  • Manufacturing (2,441 million or 18.7%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (1,376 million or 10.5%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 6,412 million in total or 49.0% of the total exports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional NSW accounted for 13.5% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 16.2% in Manufacturing and 3.8% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Canberra Region and Regional NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Mining (4.9% compared to 30.9%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Public Administration and Safety (10.5% compared to 3.8%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (19.8% compared to 13.5%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Accommodation and Food Services (9.0% compared to 4.5%)

The total total exports by industry in the Canberra Region $increased by 3,921 million between 2008/09 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2008/09 and 2022/23 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$834 million)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+$529 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$422 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$420 million)
