The City of Darebin is located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The City encompasses a total land area of 53 square kilometres. Darebin is an established residential, industrial, commercial, cultural and educational area, with substantial parklands.

The key employment sectors include retail, manufacturing, education and health. Darebin features six major retail areas (Northcote Shopping Centre - High Street, Northcote Shopping Plaza, Northland Homemaker Centre, Northland Shopping Centre, Preston Central and Preston Market) and a number of smaller centres. Darebin's major industrial areas are located in Fairfield, Preston (east) and Reservoir. Darebin has two tertiary institutions (La Trobe University and Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) and numerous schools. The major health facilities in Darebin are Bundoora Extended Care and Reservoir Private Hospital.
