Fairfield City is located in Sydney's south-western suburbs. The City encompasses a total land area of approximately 104 square kilometres. Fairfield City is predominantly residential, with substantial industrial and commercial areas, and some rural-residential areas in the west. Major commercial centres are located in the suburbs of Fairfield and Cabramatta.

The key employment sector in Fairfield City is manufacturing, with other significant employment sectors being retail trade, wholesale trade, health care, and education. Substantial industrial areas are located in the northern suburbs of Wetherill Park and Smithfield and the eastern suburbs of Fairfield East, Lansvale, Old Guildford and Yennora, with smaller industrial areas in the southern suburb of Cabramatta and the western suburbs of Cecil Park and Horsley Park. The main retail centres are the Fairfield CBD (including Fairfield Forum Shopping Centre and Neeta City Shopping Centre) and the Cabramatta CBD. Smaller retail centres include Abbotsbury Shopping Centre, Bonnyrigg Plaza, Canley Heights Shopping Centre, Canley Vale Shopping Centre, Carramar Shopping Centre, Edensor Park Plaza Shopping Centre, Fairfield Heights Shopping Centre, Greenfield Park Shopping Village, Greenway Plaza, Justin Centre Shopping Centre, Lansvale Shopping Centre, Market Town Shopping Centre, Mount Pritchard Shopping Centre, Smithfield Square Shopping Centre, St Johns Park Shopping Centre, Villawood Shopping Centre, Wakeley Shopping Centre and Wetherill Park Shopping Centre, with a homemaker centre at Wetherill Park. The main health care facilities are Fairfield Hospital, Braeside Hospital and Fairfield Community Health Centre. Educational facilities are provided at TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute (Wetherill Park College) and numerous primary and secondary schools.
