Gladstone Regional Council
The Gladstone Regional Council area is located in Central Queensland, about 550 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 10,500 square kilometres, including national parks, state forests, coastline, beaches and islands. The Gladstone Regional Council area is a growing residential area, with significant rural, rural-residential and industrial areas. The main urban centre is Gladstone, with numerous other small townships, including Agnes Water, Benaraby, Boyne Island, Calliope, Miriam Vale, Seventeen Seventy and Tannum Sands. Major industries include an alumina refinery, an aluminium smelter, a power station, a gas plant and port facilities. Rural land is used mainly for cattle grazing, with some grain growing, fodder cropping, and timber and tropical fruit production.
Key employment sectors in the Gladstone Regional Council area include manufacturing, construction, retail trade, education, accommodation and food services and health care. The main industrial areas are located in the suburbs in and around central Gladstone, including Boyne Smelters, Gladstone Power Station, Queensland Alumina Limited, Queensland Curtis Liquid Natural Gas Plant and Yarwun Refinery. The Council area has two major retail centres: the Gladstone CBD and Stockland Gladstone Shopping Centre in West Gladstone. Smaller retail centres include Boyne Plaza, Clinton Plaza, Gladstone Central Shopping Centre, Gladstone Square Shopping Centre, Kin Kora Shopping Centre, Night Owl Shopping Centre, Sun Valley Market Place, Tannum Central Shopping Centre, Tannum Shopping Centre and Toolooa Shopping Centre, with a homemaker centre at Gladstone Home Centre. Educational facilities are provided at Central Queensland University (Gladstone and Gladstone Marina Campuses) and numerous primary and secondary schools. Tourism is an important industry, with the area being home to numerous national parks, conservation parks, islands and the Great Barrier Reef. The main health care facilities in the Council area are Gladstone Hospital and Mater Misericordiae Private Hospital Gladstone.
