The City of Canning is located in the south-eastern suburbs of Perth. The City of Canning encompasses a total land area of about 65 square kilometres, and features significant river foreshore areas and parklands. Canning is a growing residential area, with some industrial and commercial land use.

Key employment sectors include manufacturing, retail and health. The main industrial areas are located in Bentley, Canning Vale, St James, Welshpool and Willetton (north). Major retail centres include Southlands, Stockland Riverton, Westfield Carousel and Market City, with a number of other significant centres (East Cannington Square, Livingston Marketplace, Lynwood Village, Parkwood Square, Riverdrive Village, Rossmoyne Village, Shelley Hub and The Bentley Centre).
