An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in City of Launceston in 2016/17 shows the three largest industries were:

- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services ($223 million or 10.9%)
- Mining ($164 million or 8.0%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $1,224 million in total or 60.0% of the total imports by total industry in the City of Launceston.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Greater Hobart accounted for 30.1% in Manufacturing; 7.2% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 8.2% in Mining.
