Macarthur Region


The MACROC area is located in Sydney's south-western suburbs, between 30 and 75 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. The MACROC area (Macarthur Regional Association of Councils) encompasses three local government areas: the Camden Council area, Campbelltown City and Wollondilly Shire. The MACROC area encompasses a total land area of about 3,100 square kilometres. The MACROC area is a rural and growing residential area, with substantial industrial and commercial areas. The MACROC area includes national parks, bushland and water catchments. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, including market gardens, orchards, dairy farms, poultry farms and grazing. Coal mining is also a major industry.

The key employment sectors in the MACROC area are manufacturing, construction, retail trade, health care and education. The main industrial areas in the MACROC area are located in the suburbs of Narellan and Smeaton Grange in the Camden Council area, the suburbs of Campbelltown, Ingleburn, Leumeah and Minto in Campbelltown City, and the suburbs of Picton, Silverdale and Warragamba in Wollondilly Shire. Other significant industrial areas are the Appin Colliery, the Tahmoor Colliery, the West Cliff Colliery and the Appin Mine. The major retail centres in the MACROC area are Campbelltown Mall, Macarthur Square Shopping Centre and the Camden CBD. Other significant retail centres include Airds Village Shopping Centre, Bradbury Shopping Centre, Camden Central Shopping Centre, the Campbelltown commercial area, Claymore Shopping Centre, Eagle Vale Shopping Centre, Glenquarie Shopping Centre, Glen Alpine Shopping Centre, Harrington Plaza Shopping Centre, Ingleburn Fair Shopping Centre, Ingleburn Town Centre, Lagonda Shopping Village, Marketfair Shopping Centre, Minto Mall, Mount Annan Central, Mount Annan Marketplace, Mount Annan Shopping Village, Narellan Town Centre, the Picton CBD, Picton Mall Shopping Centre, Raby Shopping Centre, Rosemeadow Marketplace, Ruse Village Shopping Centre, St Andrews Shopping Centre and Tahmoor Shopping Centre. The MACROC area has one major public hospital (Campbelltown Hospital), one small public hospital (Camden District Hospital), one small private hospital (Campbelltown Private Hospital), two large aged care facilities (Carrington Centennial Care and Queen Victoria Gardens) and two addiction treatment centres (Maryfields Day Recovery Centre and Odyssey House). The MACROC area features three tertiary institutions: TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute (Campbelltown College and Macquarie Fields College), The University of Sydney (Camden Farm, Coates Park Farm, May Farm, Mount Hunter Farm, Westwood and Animal Reproduction Unit & Plant Breeding Institute) and University of Western Sydney (Campbelltown Campus). The MACROC area is also home to Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute and numerous public and private schools.
