The City of Maribyrnong is located in Melbourne's inner western suburbs. The City encompasses a total land area of 31 square kilometres. Land is used for residential, commercial, industrial and educational purposes.

The key employment sectors are retail, manufacturing, health and education. Maribyrnong features two major retail areas (Highpoint Shopping Centre and Footscray Central Business District) and several smaller centres (Barkly Village, Braybrook Plaza, Central West Plaza, Homemaker City Maribyrnong, Seddon Village and Yarraville Village). Maribyrnong’s major industrial areas are located in Braybrook, Tottenham, West Footscray and Yarraville. Maribyrnong features one major public hospital (Western Hospital) and one private hospital (Western Private). Maribyrnong has one tertiary institution (Victoria University) and numerous schools.
