Dominant groups
An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing (1,255 million or 15.6%)
- Accommodation and Food Services (1,253 million or 15.6%)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1,114 million or 13.9%)
In combination these three industries accounted for 3,622 million in total or 45.1% of the total exports by industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional NSW accounted for 16.2% in Manufacturing; 4.5% in Accommodation and Food Services and 13.5% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.
The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and Regional NSW were:
- A smaller percentage of total exports by Mining (4.5% compared to 30.9%)
- A larger percentage of total exports by Accommodation and Food Services (15.6% compared to 4.5%)
- A larger percentage of total exports by Retail Trade (8.7% compared to 3.3%)
- A larger percentage of total exports by Education and Training (6.8% compared to 3.8%)

The total total exports by industry in the Northern Rivers Region $increased by 2,894 million between 2008/09 and 2022/23.
The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2008/09 and 2022/23 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:
- Accommodation and Food Services (+$860 million)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$471 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$291 million)
- Retail Trade (+$286 million)
