In the Northern Rivers Region, Manufacturing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $1,255 million in 2022/23.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Northern Rivers Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing (1,255 million or 15.6%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (1,253 million or 15.6%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1,114 million or 13.9%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 3,622 million in total or 45.1% of the total exports by industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 14.3% in Manufacturing; 2.4% in Accommodation and Food Services and 4.1% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.8% compared to 14.5%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Accommodation and Food Services (15.6% compared to 2.4%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (13.9% compared to 4.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (3.3% compared to 10.0%)

Emerging groups

The total total exports by industry in the Northern Rivers Region $increased by 1,855 million between 2017/18 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2017/18 and 2022/23 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:

  • Accommodation and Food Services (+$722 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$351 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$266 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$211 million)
