Health Care and Social Assistance employs more of the Northern Rivers Region's resident workforce than any other industry sector.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in the Northern Rivers Region in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (22,893 people or 17.5%)
  • Retail Trade (13,551 people or 10.4%)
  • Construction (12,760 people or 9.8%)

In combination these three industries employed 49,204 people in total or 37.7% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, NSW employed 14.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.0% in Retail Trade and 8.6% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Financial and Insurance Services (1.5% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (5.3% compared to 8.9%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Health Care and Social Assistance (17.5% compared to 14.4%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Accommodation and Food Services (8.9% compared to 6.2%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident workforce between 2016 and 2021 in the Northern Rivers Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+4,648 resident workforce)
  • Construction (+2,476 resident workforce)
  • Education and Training (+1,743 resident workforce)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,542 resident workforce)
