Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in the Northern Rivers Region. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the Northern Rivers Region’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:
- Construction ($5,289 million or 17.1%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance ($2,978 million or 9.7%)
- Manufacturing ($2,667 million or 8.6%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $10,933 million in total or 35.4% of the total output by total industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 13.4% in Construction; 5.7% in Health Care and Social Assistance and 9.5% in Manufacturing.
The major differences between output by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:
- A smaller percentage of output by Financial and Insurance Services (2.4% compared to 9.0%)
- A larger percentage of output by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (6.8% compared to 2.5%)
- A smaller percentage of output by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (5.5% compared to 9.7%)
- A larger percentage of output by Accommodation and Food Services (7.2% compared to 3.1%)

The total industry output in the Northern Rivers Region increased by $4,989 million between 2017/18 and 2022/23.
The largest changes in the output by industries between 2017/18 and 2022/23 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:
- Construction (+$972 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$816 million)
- Accommodation and Food Services (+$685 million)
- Retail Trade (+$450 million)
