Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($2,662 million or 28.7%)
  • Mining ($920 million or 9.9%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($819 million or 8.8%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $4,401 million in total or 47.4% of the total imports by industry in the the Northern Tasmania Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional TAS accounted for 27.7% in Manufacturing; 6.7% in Mining and 9.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Northern Tasmania Region and Regional TAS were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Mining (9.9% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (6.5% compared to 7.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2.7% compared to 3.6%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Manufacturing (28.7% compared to 27.7%)

The total total imports by industry in the Northern Tasmania Region increased by $1,682 million between 2008/09 and 2022/23.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2008/09 and 2022/23 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$441 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$381 million)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+$196 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$187 million)
