Parkes Shire is located in central New South Wales. The Shire encompasses a total land area of about 5,900 square kilometres. Parkes Shire is predominantly rural, with more than two-thirds of the population living in the township of Parkes. Smaller townships are located at Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore, with villages at Alectown, Bogan Gate and Cookamidgera. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, particularly sheep grazing and crop growing, with some cattle grazing, copper and gold mining, and forestry.
Key employment sectors include retail trade, health care, agriculture and mining. The major retail centre in the Shire is the Parkes CBD, with less significant retail areas in the smaller townships and villages. The main health care facility is Parkes Hospital, with a number of aged care and smaller health facilities.
NOTE: The land use shown in the map is derived from ABS Mesh Block categories. Mesh Blocks broadly identify land use and are not designed to provide definitive land use. It is purely an indicator of the main planned land use for a Mesh Blocks. For more information please refer to ABS Mesh Block categories.
