The Town of Port Hedland is located in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The Town encompasses a total land area of over 18,000 square kilometres. The Town of Port Hedland is predominantly rural, with small townships at Port Hedland and South Hedland. The Town includes significant industrial areas. Rural land is used mainly for cattle grazing.

The key employment sector in the Town of Port Hedland is mining, with the other main employment sectors being construction, transport postal and warehousing, accommodation and food services, manufacturing, retail trade and health care. The Town of Port Hedland includes Australia’s largest bulk export port, the Port of Port Hedland, as well as industrial areas around the township of Port Hedland. Iron ore mining is the main industry, with some gas and salt production. The main retail areas are Port Hedland Boulevard shopping centre, Port Plaza Arcade and South Hedland Square shopping centre. Health care facilities are provided at Hedland Health Campus and Wirraka Maya Health Service in South Hedland.
