RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island
The RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island Region is located to the east, south and south-west of Adelaide. The Region encompasses a total land area of 8,752 square kilometres, including significant areas of coastline, water catchments and conservation areas. The RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island Region is predominantly rural, with substantial rural-residential areas and growing township and holiday areas. The Region includes the major centres of Mount Barker and Victor Harbor, the townships of Goolwa, Kingscote, Normanville, Port Elliot, Stirling, Strathalbyn and Yankalilla, and numerous smaller townships, villages and settlements. Rural land is used mainly for agriculture, particularly sheep and cattle grazing, crop and fruit growing, viticulture, fishing and forestry. Tourism is an important industry, with considerable holiday accommodation in the coastal settlements.
Key employment sectors in the RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island Region include health care, retail trade, accommodation and food services, education and agriculture, forestry and fishing. The main health care facility in the Region is South Coast District Hospital at Victor Harbor, with smaller health care facilities at Gumeracha District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Stirling Hospital, Kangaroo Island Health Service and Strathalbyn and District Health Service. Retail areas are located mainly in the townships of Goolwa, Gumeracha, Hahndorf, Kingscote, Lobethal, Mount Barker, Mount Torrens, Normanville, Port Elliot, Stirling, Strathalbyn, Victor Harbor, Woodside and Yankalilla. Bulky goods shopping is provided at Mt Barker Homemaker Centre. Tourism is an important industry, with numerous natural attractions (coastline, conservation parks, national parks, wilderness protection areas and beaches), numerous built attractions, and accommodation places mainly along the coast and on Kangaroo Island. Educational facilities are provided at TAFE SA (Mount Barker and Victor Harbor Campuses), Flinders University Rural Clinical School (Victor Harbor) and numerous schools.
