In the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing most productive industry, generating $736 million in 2022/23.

Value added by industry is an indicator of business productivity in the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region. It shows how productive each industry sector is at increasing the value of its inputs. It is a more refined measure of the productivity of an industry sector than output (total gross revenue), as some industries have high levels of output but require large amounts of input expenditure to achieve that.

By comparing the value added of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the valued added by industry sectors in the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region in 2021/22 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (736 million or 22.6%)
  • Mining (445 million or 13.7%)
  • Construction (386 million or 11.9%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 1,567 million in total or 48.1% of the total value added by industry in the the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional SA accounted for 25.1% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 19.5% in Mining and 11.5% in Construction.

The major differences between the value added by industries of the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region and Regional SA were:

  • A smaller percentage of value added by Mining (13.7% compared to 19.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of value added by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (22.6% compared to 25.1%)
  • A larger percentage of value added by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (4.4% compared to 2.8%)
  • A larger percentage of value added by Health Care and Social Assistance (8.7% compared to 7.4%)

The largest changes in the value added by industries between 2008/09 and 2022/23 in the RDA Eyre Peninsula Region were for:

  • Accommodation and Food Services (+$50 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$41 million)
