Noosa Shire is located in south-east Queensland. The Shire encompasses a total land area of 871 square kilometres, including significant beaches, coastline, waterways, national parks, state forests and bushland. Noosa Shire is a growing residential and tourist area, with substantial rural, rural-residential and parkland areas. Urban development is concentrated in the coastal communities and eastern beaches. The main residential areas are located around the Noosa River in the townships of Noosa Heads, Noosaville and Tewantin, the coastal suburbs of Castaways Beach, Marcus Beach, Peregian Beach and Sunshine Beach, and the small villages of Boreen Point, Cooran, Cooroy, Kin Kin and Pomona. Much of the rural area is used for forestry, farming, cattle grazing and crop growing. Tourism is an important industry.
Key employment sectors in Noosa Shire include accommodation and food services, retail trade, health care and education. Tourism is a major industry, with many resorts and holiday accommodation places. The main retail areas are located in Noosa Heads and Noosaville, including the Hastings Street commercial area, Bay Village Noosa, Noosa Civic, Noosa Fair Shopping Centre, Noosa Junction Plaza, Noosa Marina and Noosa Village. Smaller retail areas are located in Tewantin (Noosa Outlook Shopping Centre) and the Cooroy township. Bulky goods shopping is provided at Noosa Homemaker Centre in Noosaville. The main health care facility is Noosa Hospital, with a smaller private hospital (Eden Private Hospital) in Cooroy. Educational facilities are provided at CQUniversity (Noosa Campus) and numerous schools.
