Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in the Sunshine Coast Council area. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the Sunshine Coast Council area’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

An analysis of the output by industry sectors in the Sunshine Coast Council area in 2019/20 shows the three largest industries were:
- Construction ($7,248 million or 21.6%)
- Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services ($4,325 million or 12.9%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance ($2,865 million or 8.5%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $14,438 million in total or 43.0% of the total output by total industry in the the Sunshine Coast Council area.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 13.7% in Construction; 8.0% in Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services and 6.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance.
The major differences between output by industries of the Sunshine Coast Council area and Queensland were:
- A smaller percentage of output by Mining (1.4% compared to 11.6%)
- A larger percentage of output by Construction (21.6% compared to 13.7%)
- A larger percentage of output by Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (12.9% compared to 8.0%)
- A smaller percentage of output by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (4.3% compared to 6.8%)
The total industry output in the Sunshine Coast Council area increased by $6,733 million between 2014/15 and 2019/20.
The largest changes in the output by industries between 2014/15 and 2019/20 in the Sunshine Coast Council area were for:
- Construction (+$1,095 million)
- Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (+$1,030 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$982 million)
