Southern Downs Regional Council
The Southern Downs Regional Council area is located in south-east Queensland. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 7,100 square kilometres. The Southern Downs Regional Council area is predominantly rural, with numerous small townships. The largest townships are Warwick and Stanthorpe, with smaller townships at Allora, Killarney, Wallangarra and Yangan. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, with forestry and viticulture also being important industries.
Key employment sectors in the Southern Downs Regional Council area include agriculture forestry and fishing, retail trade, manufacturing, health care and education. The main agricultural industries are sheep and cattle grazing, and fruit, vegetable and grain growing, with viticulture also being important. Forestry is a significant industry, with the Council area being home to numerous state forests. The main commercial centre is the Warwick CBD (including Rose City Shoppingworld), with smaller commercial areas in the townships of Allora, Killarney and Stanthorpe. Health care facilities are provided at Stanthorpe Hospital, Warwick Hospital and various aged care places. Educational facilities are provided at TAFE Queensland South West (Warwick Campus), University of Southern Queensland (Queensland College of Wine Tourism and USQHub@Stanthorpe) and numerous schools.
