Total industries employs more of Tasmania's resident workforce than any other industry sector.

Industry sector data identifies the industries in which the residents of an area work either within the residing area or elsewhere. Comparing the industry sectors in which Tasmania residents are employed in the industry sectors that are located in Tasmania, indicates whether an economy draws on the skills offered by its own residents, or on a different set of skills imported from elsewhere in the region.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in Tasmania in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (41,663 people or 16.4%)
  • Retail Trade (24,367 people or 9.6%)
  • Education and Training (24,034 people or 9.4%)

In combination these three industries employed 90,064 people in total or 35.4% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, Greater Hobart employed 16.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.4% in Retail Trade and 10.5% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of Tasmania and Greater Hobart were:

  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (5.3% compared to 2.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Public Administration and Safety (7.3% compared to 10.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (5.1% compared to 6.4%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Manufacturing (6.2% compared to 5.1%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident workforce between 2016 and 2021 in Tasmania were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+11,014 resident workforce)
  • Construction (+5,344 resident workforce)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+4,724 resident workforce)
  • Education and Training (+3,993 resident workforce)
