The Hills Shire


The Hills Shire is located in Sydney's north-western suburbs. The Shire encompasses a total land area of about 380 square kilometres. The Shire is a predominantly rural and residential area, with some commercial and industrial land use. Most of the land in the northern section is rural, the southern section is residential, and there are expanding residential areas in the central region. The Shire is one of the fastest growing Local Government areas in Sydney. Rural land is used mainly for farming and other agricultural industries, including nurseries.

The key employment sectors include retail, property and business, and to a lesser extent, manufacturing, health, construction and education. The major retail centre is Castle Towers Shopping Centre, with numerous other significant centres (Norwest Marketown, Rouse Hill Town Centre and Stockland Mall. The main industrial areas are located in Baulkham Hillls, Bella Vista and Castle Hill. The Shire has one private hospital (The Hills Private) and a number of aged care facilities. The Hills features one tertiary institution (TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute) and numerous private and public schools.
