Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in the Townsville City Council. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the Townsville City Council’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in the Townsville City Council in 2022/23 shows the three largest industries were:
- Public Administration and Safety ($3,840 million or 14.3%)
- Construction ($3,704 million or 13.8%)
- Manufacturing ($2,711 million or 10.1%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $10,255 million in total or 38.1% of the total output by total industry in the the Townsville City Council.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Regional QLD accounted for 3.4% in Public Administration and Safety; 13.5% in Construction and 9.1% in Manufacturing.
The major differences between output by industries of the Townsville City Council and Regional QLD were:
