The Waverley Council area is located in the inner-eastern suburbs of Sydney. The Council area encompasses a total land area of 9 square kilometres, including substantial foreshore areas and beaches. The Waverley Council area is predominantly residential, with significant commercial areas.

The key employment sectors in the Waverley Council area are retail trade and health care, with tourism, accommodation and food services, and education and training also being important employment sectors. Significant retail areas in the Council area include the Bondi Junction Business District, Eastgate Shopping Centre and Westfield Bondi Junction Shopping Centre, with smaller centres at Bondi Road Village in Bondi, Charing Cross Village in Waverley, and Tiffany Plaza in Bondi Junction. The main health care facilities are War Memorial Hospital Waverley, Bondi Junction Private Hospital and various aged care facilities. Tourism is an important industry, with many beaches, baths, parks, attractions and accommodation places. Educational facilities are provided at numerous private and public schools, including Kesser Torah College and Moriah College.
